Features
Design Philosophy
Before the Fendt 1000, the standard tractor market only went up to 400 horsepower. Getting bigger than 400 horsepower meant using a different kind of machine. Articulates and track machines come with a much heavier unladen weight. These bigger tractors are usually at least 17T and have inflexible ballast options. Often without CVT, and poor operator comfort and visibility, there is room for improvement. Fendt wanted their world class efficiency and comfort to improve this category. The priority with the Fendt 1000 series was to provide high land coverage with lowest cost per acre. The Fendt 1000 offers a brand new segment of standard tractors. The comfort and flexibility of these tractors addresses the weaknesses of the current market.
The Fendt 1000 breaks new ground in its demand for efficiency. There are a few main innovations that make up the Fendt iD standard. There is a new engine, fan concept, drive train, and hydraulic configuration. These systems combine to make up the low engine speed concept (Fendt iD) of the 1000 series.
The Fendt 1000 uses a MAN six-cylinder 12.4 L engine (pronounced as letters M-A-N). The engine is Tier 4 final compliant and uses a VTG turbocharger. The benchmarks of this engine is what sets the tractor series apart. The Fendt 1000 idles at a fuel saving 650 rpm. The speed range is from 650 to 1700 rpm. At 40km/h the engine runs at 950 rpm, and increases to a mere 1200 rpm for 50km/h travel. There is maximum torque at 1100 rpm, which remains almost constant up to 1450 rpm. The greatest torque and power are both available at fuel efficient engine speeds. These capabilities make the 1000 series different from other tractors. They are ideal for high efficiency in field work situations.
The Fendt 1000 series has a precise fan mounted with less than 2mm of clearance from the blades to hood. This concentric air system (CAS) is in front of the cooler unit under the hood. The fan is hydraulic drive. It runs independent of the engine speed, which also allows it to sit at an angle, sucking air from above. This angle results in an optimized air stream pulling air through the shaped hood. The air is free of dirt from below. It is also cooler air which is higher in density and provides more force as it goes through the radiator. This system offers superior cooling to traditional methods.
The most innovative feature of the Fendt 1000 is the VarioDrive drive train. It uses the same principle as other Fendt models, but has a second hydraulic motor on the front axle as well. The motors on the front and rear axles are both connected to the same hydraulic pump.
This new drive train works because force always takes the path of least resistance. The oil motors will thus take more or less oil depending on the resistance on each axle. An intelligent four wheel drive clutch shifts the torque between axles as needed. This is Fendt torque distribution. If the front axle experiences slip, the front hydraulic motor begins to take more oil. A sensor measures this change, and the four wheel drive clutch closes. This clutch allows torque to divert to the rear axle. Likewise, if the back axle slips, the clutch is closed and torque diverts to the front axle. This intelligent torque distribution allows for continuous traction. The clutch remains closed until the oil flowing to the two motors equalizes.
Out on the road, the motors on the axles are also at work. At about 25km/h the front axle motor disconnects from the pump. As the tractor accelerates more, the rear pump is also disconnected. At this point the rear axle has completely mechanical power. This eliminates the drag losses of the hydraulic motors and improves efficiency. Fendt torque distribution will still kick-in at mechanical powered road speed if required.
Variable four wheel drive is the way the front and rear interact. The hydraulic pump feeds the two motors of the two axles with equal oil. But as the tractor turns, the front wheel needs to travel a farther distance than the rear. Because the oil is free to transition between axles, it shifts to the front tire and that wheel speeds up. This transition pulls the tractor through the corner. Because the hydraulic pump feeds both axle motors, there is room for this change. This interplay acts as a front to rear differential as needed.
The hydraulics of the Fendt 1000 are also tailored for this low engine speed concept. The available pumps are able to provide high litre capacities at low engine speeds. The biggest single load sensing pump option can provide flow of 220 L/min. The Fendt 1000 can also have two load sensing pumps that combine for a capacity of 430 L/min. The right block gets exclusive use of this dedicated second pump option. With this two pump system, separate demands can receive separate quantities and pressures. A small oil consumer with a high pressure need (like a cylinder) can use the left block. At the same time, a high quantity consumer with a low pressure need (like an oil pump) can use the right block. Having these demands separated increases efficiency. This way a single pump does not need to be adjusting its speed all the time.
VarioGrip is an option on the Fendt 1000 series. It is a system that allows the operator to regulate tire pressure right from the terminal. The preferred tire pressure for road transport is higher than for field work. The farmer can select a lower tire pressure in the field. This flattens the tire out, giving the tractor better grip, and decreasing soil compaction. There is the potential for significant savings both in fuel and in caring for the soil. Back on the road, the tire pressure increases again. Running a higher pressure on the road reduces wear and fuel consumption. In both applications there are savings to be had.
Maple Lane Advantage
There is a lot to say about the Fendt 1000. This is a great machine, one that can change the way you farm. You can farm with a great tractor, but you still need the right people to stand behind it. Maple Lane has been dealing with Fendt almost since it first arrived in North America. We are ready to help you. We can provide service and sales knowledge that match the edge you gain with having a tractor like this. Get the expertise you need to run a Fendt 1000 Vario.
